The Winter Olympics started on February 6th and have captured the eyes of millions of people throughout the world. Especially now that it the Olympics feature new sports such as: Ski mountaineering, which is a sport where the player attaches climbing skin to the bottom of their skis allowing them to both ski and climb at the same time. This allows for both ascending and descending terrain giving more challenge to the players.
Another new event is called mixed team skeleton where a man and woman from the same country are teamed together and race down and ice track on a sled. There is also duel moguls which is an event where two skiers perform tricks and aerial tricks for points. Women alone have also gotten a new sport which is the double luge. Two women from the same country double up on the same sled and race down the ice track feet first. This has been a male only sport since the 1960s.
So far, the country in the lead is Norway in first place for their performances in speed skating, cross country and ski jumping. In second place is currently Sweden, who got gold in alpine skiing twice and one in freestyle skiing tying them with Norway. In third place is Austria and have two gold medals but scores are soon to change and it’s still anyone’s game! Sadly, Lindsey Vonn during her comeback to skiing in the Olympics had a crash due to a torn ACL.
Although the Winter Olympics are yet to be over already, so much surrounding the event has happened and many say it is one of the most exciting years for the Olympics we have seen in awhile. More people have been talking about it ever. Like how Switzerland’s Mathilde Gremaud won back to back gold medals in sloop-style skiing and Jutta Leerman breaking Olympic records in the 1000m speed skating.
The world is excited to see more development in the Winter Olympics for 2026 and many fans are also waiting to see what records can be broken and what can still develop for the competitors and the event as a whole.
