The Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 movie was released on December 5th, 2025. Sequeling the 2023 movie Five Nights at Freddy’s. This series of movies is inspired by the original 2014 horror game series Five Nights at Freddy’s (FNaF).
The FNaF movies are written by the creator of the FNaF games, Scott Cawthon, and directed by Emma Tammi. Overall, the movie isn’t perfect. But it is definitely a better horror movie than the first, with notable jumpscares and a better atmosphere.
Sadly, the movie felt quite dull in its plot. It is a continuation of the first movie, with about a year difference in the storyline. Before watching this movie, make sure you watch the first. Without it, you’ll be completely lost.
The first FNaF movie has a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 33%, which means that only 33% of critics liked it. Whereas FNaF2 has an even worse 14%. While it’s obvious by these extremely low critic ratings that the movies aren’t exactly cinematic masterpieces.
The Rotten Tomatoes website also has a “Popcornmeter” rating, which is the audience’s rating. The Popcornmeter rating for the first FNaF game is at a very solid 86%, and the new FNaF 2 movie has a very slightly higher rating of 87%.
Forbes released an article on December 6th, quickly covering these different ratings and bringing to attention that the FNaF 2 movie has the highest percentage split between critics and audience ratings in Rotten Tomatoes history. Currently at a 71% split, down from the 75% on the 6th.
In the box office the FNaF 2 movie made $64 million within the first weekend. Nearly doubling its $36 million budget. As of December 12th, it has made over $120 million worldwide. Compared to the original FNaF movie, this sequel made less money on opening weekend, but it clearly earned more than enough money to justify producing a third movie in the series.
The community of FNaF has been tremendously dedicated ever since the game’s release; many popular YouTubers, including Markiplier and MatPat from GameTheory, immensely boosted their careers by making videos on FNaF near to its 2014 release. These videos are still some of the most popular videos on their channels even up until today. Markiplier’s original FNaF video has over 126 million views, and GameTheory’s first FNaF video has 35 million views. Setting FNaF in YouTube history.
This community has been filled with memes and genuine love of the series. Mostly because of these YouTube videos, but not just because of the gameplay ones. It’s more about the game’s lore. The storyline of the entire series. And the community absolutely adores its references in this movie. There are many different references to the community, including a meme and some smaller Easter eggs for those who pay close attention.
Overall, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 is a pretty good movie, but definitely not amazing. The horror aspects are very solid, and the level of terror is up from the first one. This movie is a great sequel to the first, but because of that, you need to make sure you watch it before watching the new one.
