Just a week after Halloween, Frederick once again became a spooky site with the opening of Frederick Theatre’s Macbeth. Cheer got second at Saturday’s Rock the Mat tournament, and both varsity tackle football and varsity girls volleyball learned that they would move on to post-season playoffs.
Tuesday was Election Day, but there wasn’t much to vote on in this off-year election. The biggest state ballot items were Propositions LL and MM, both of which asked to retain more tax money from the top 6% of Coloradans to fund free school meals statewide. Other places had more exciting elections: New York City got a new mayor, and Virginia and New Jersey got new Democrat governors. California also passed the highly debated Proposition 50.
Speaking on politics, a Colorado member of the House of Representatives drew criticism for a Halloween costume that many believed was racist toward Latinos. Former Vice President Dick Cheney passed away, and a federal court blocked a new state law that aims to rein in the big tech companies.
This week was a mixed bag for Colorado sports. The Denver Broncos extended their winning streak by barely beating the Las Vegas Raiders 10-7. The Denver Nuggets overcame a loss on Halloween with three wins in their third week of the season over the Kings, the Heat, and the Warriors. The Colorado Avalanche won a game against the Lightning but lost a game against the Sharks. Baseball season also came to a close when the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Toronto Blue Jays in Game 7.
Movie theaters were pretty empty this weekend, which is to be expected when Halloween falls on a Friday. The movie that topped the weekend box office was, unsurprisingly, the horror film Black Phone 2, but just a few thousand dollars behind it was last week’s rom-com hit Regretting You, the anime import Chainsaw Man: Reze Arc, and a theatrical rerelease of K-Pop Demon Hunters. Netflix had a notable release late in the week with Guillermo del Toro’s star-studded take on Frankenstein. This was the forty-fifth week of 2025, which means that 85% of the year is over.
