There was a lot going on at Frederick this week. Frederick Theatre’s Macbeth closed on Saturday, and Monday was Frederick’s Open House, which was attended by around 200 parents. While the regular season for fall sports has ended at Frederick High, both varsity tackle football and varsity girl’s volleyball earned a spot in the playoffs. Volleyball beat Erie in their playoff round, but after a loss to Rock Canyon, their season ended. Meanwhile, football won a home game against the Bear Creek Bears 35-7 and will move on to the second round of playoffs next week.
The biggest news outside of Frederick was the end of the longest government shutdown in US history after 8 senators caved to Republicans. As Mike Johnson called the House back into session, Adelita Grijalva was finally sworn in after a record-long delay, and she provided the final signature needed to force a vote on the release of the Epstein Files (though over 200,000 pages of his emails were released by the House Oversight Committee). Beyond politics, this week saw the 2025 Latin Grammys, one of the most brutal terrorist battles in modern history, and the postponement of adding water to the Chimney Hollow Reservoir that will provide Frederick’s water in the future due to a toxic risk.
The Colorado Avalanche swept all four games they had this week and established a five-game winning streak. The Denver Nuggets also won all three of their games this week (they are 10-2). Since the Broncos played on Thursday Night Football last week, they are still at 8-2.
The weekend box office was dominated by Predator: Badlands and its $40 million opening. Three other films—Sarah’s Oil, Nuremburg, and Die My Love—also opened in the top ten. Despite these successes, this weekend also had the worst opening of the year in over 2,000 theaters with boxing biopic Christy, which only opened to $1.3 million on a $15 million budget. On streaming, Netflix released In Your Dreams, Sony Animation’s follow-up to the summer hit K-Pop Demon Hunters, and Hulu dropped the third season of their popular reality series The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives. This was the forty-sixth week of 2025, which means that 86.8% of the year is over.
