The biggest story at Frederick High this week was varsity tackle football. In a game against No. 2 seed Montrose, our Golden Eagles lost to the Red Hawks 55-6, ending their 2025 playoff run. As for other athletics, winter sports wrapped up their tryouts in preparation for their first games of the season after break. Frederick Theatre also held auditions for their student-directed one-acts in January. The library also held an off-campus fundraiser at Meco Coffee to help fund library resources.
In the wider world, the Trump administration announced that they are dismantling the Department of Education while facing criticism for their leaked pro-Russia peace plan and for hosting Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman at the White House. However, Trump lost a key ally after a MAGA congress member announced their resignation effective January 5–this will, at least temporarily, shrink the GOP’s House majority from 6 to 5.
In sports, the Denver Broncos cinched a playoff spot with six games left in the season. The Denver Nuggets also had a good week as they won three of their four games (they are 12-3). Meanwhile, the Colorado Avalanche extended their winning streak to seven games with victories over the Islanders and the Rangers. The biggest upset this week, however, was in the world of beauty pageants and not sports: after calling out a pageant host for bullying her and inspiring a walkout by contestants, a 25-year-old woman overcame a massive hate campaign to win Miss Universe.
In theaters, Now You See Me, Now You Don’t surprised analysts when it opened higher than The Running Man, a big-budget Stephen King adaptation starring Glenn Powell and directed by Edgar Wright. Rental Family, horror auteur Osgood Perkin’s third film in the past 18 months, also was released to mixed reviews. On streaming, Amazon’s animated hit Hazbin Hotel finished its second season. This was the forty-seventh week of 2025, which means that 88.7% of the year is over.
