It may be too early in the school year to distinguish just if someone is being racist, but it’s also never too early to start. Some people may not even know they were being racial towards another person—just a simple brush off their shoulders and it was never spoke of again. Some words have more impacts on people. Always be cautious when speaking about certain things.
While racism at Frederick High School doesn’t seem to be the biggest problem during the first month of school starting, it’s not hard to hear slip-ups or jokes about other races in conversations along the hallways and classrooms. The length of these words runs deep and don’t easily leave some mindsets. Kids start to think of themselves differently from the rest which shouldn’t happen.
It’s known that most people experience racism at one point in their lives, some more than others. It’s easy for some students to easily fit into the crowd, even as new students which is unfair to others. To find friends, make memories, and more, while some kids don’t have this luxury. Hearing certain words float around the classroom can be very hurtful to students.
Furthermore, racism at Frederick High School needs to be approached and understood more. As a community, Frederick should be careful around words and who they’re said to. Even thought it’s early on in the year, racism is already happening.
