Grab your pens–Inktober has started!Inktober a yearly drawing challenge through the month of October where artists draw and post an ink drawing on their social media every day. The Inktober website releases 31 prompts for each of the 31 days of October in order to challenge artists to get out of their comfort zones and start tapping into their creativity. It’s an easy challenge for anyone to build better art skills, whether an expert or a novice.

Started in 2009 by illustrator Jake Parker, Inktober started as a personal challenge between friends and over the past decade has turned into a global phenomenon. This year, Inktober has even partnered with Emmy-award winning animation series Primal and has been picked up by several celebrities on social media. Here is their prompt list for this year:

So how do you participate in Inktober? Simple: draw something that fits the prompt of the day, then post it on social media with the hashtag of Inktober.

Do you have to use ink? No, but it’s encouraged. Digital artists can participate, and colored inks are welcome as well. Do you have to do it every day? No, just so long as you consistently draw for everyone to see (there’s even a new weekly challenge called Inktober52 for those who can manage once-a-week better than once a day). Do you even have to draw? While it’s encouraged, some people have used the prompts to make other forms of art, such as poems or short stories every day.

According to Parker, “Inktober is just a framework to get yourself to flex a little and have some fun with your art […] It’s a challenge to see how much you can improve your art in a month, and to be inspired or to help inspire other artists to do the same.⁣”

As far as posting, all that you need to do is share your art on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram with the tags #inktober and #inktober2020 so that everyone can see your art. We also encourage you to tag #FHS and #FrederickScout, as we want to feature some of our favorite student sketches this month. So let’s get those creative juices flowing–grab your pens and make some art!
