On Friday, December 11, Netflix’s newest original film The Prom hit its platform with a powerful impact. The film starring Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman, James Cordon, Jo Ellen Pellman, and so many other amazing actors is a huge rollercoaster of emotions. The film takes you through the storyline of a teenage girl whose only dream is to bring her girlfriend to her school’s prom but is denied that opportunity. As a result of her being denied her rights, her story breaks the news and is presented to a group of down-on-their-luck Broadway stars who may be able to use this to help raise their PR.

The film opens with a debate and questioning of who is in favor of a mysterious situation and who is opposed. It then continues to lead viewers through a series of questioning and interviews after a PTA meeting in which one sentence is said leaving a stunned Emma (Played by Joe Ellen Pellman) to watch as the screen fades to darkness. The movie then completely switches from a small town into Indiana to the lights and craziness of New York City and Broadway where viewers get to see a new part of the cast come in and sing to their heart’s content. When a Broadway play doesn’t go as planned however the films Broadway stars Dee Dee Allen (Meryl Streep), Barry Glickman (James Cordon) have a bad show that could ruin their careers. As a way to find ways to promote themselves and get some good PR, they form a group with other down-on-their-luck stars Angie Dickinson (Nicole Kidman) and Trent Oliver (Andrew Rannells).

The storyline then continues using a bunch of different upbeat and slower songs that drive your emotions insane as the movie continues to tell the story of Emma and how she was denied the right to take her girlfriend to prom. It shows the hardship of finding out who you truly are, who you can be when you put your mind to it, finding true love, and overcoming your past. The rollercoaster continues through the movie as viewers see something joyous occur, to see something terrible happen, to seeing the whole cycle repeat a few times. It truly tears viewers apart but keeps them entertained just as much.

Transferring away from the storyline one of the coolest things about this movie was the fact that during some songs and some scenes the viewer truly feels like they are watching a broadway musical but instead of it being live you’re watching it from a tv screen. One amazing example was during the scene where Emma and Angie Dickinson performed the song “zazz”. Due to the lighting changes of bright to dark and more lighting on Emma and Angie during the whole scene it truly felt like you were watching a broadway musical. It was so cool to see the producers and directors put together a movie where you could feel like you were in New York without actually being there.

Another that made the film feel like a real Broadway musical was the fact that there were more singing and dancing than there was actual dialogue spoken throughout the film. Of course, you had the small snippets of dialogue to break up the music but for the majority of the film, it was all music. Both happy and upbeat and sad and yet still uplifting.

The instrumentals, beats created, songs, lyrics, choreography, and so much more were put into place perfectly giving this movie such a unique and vibrant feeling to it. Some songs made you want to get up and dance while others made you want to cry. Each one gave you a different emotion but not enough to make you dislike the film.

Rotten Tomatoes even gave the movie a review stating:

“Through fiery songs and dance breaks, The Prom‘s bonanza of glitz, glitter, and jazz hands might be enough to whisk audiences away.”

Continuing on Rottentomatoes.com top critic Aja Romano said:

“The jokes land, the cast is superb, the score is still charming, and fans of the show will have little to complain about.” Many other top critics agreed with this statement as well.

The Prom is a movie that came out on Netflix on December 11. It’s a movie that I would highly recommend if you want to see a touching story that gives your emotions a rollercoaster of a ride. I truly did enjoy this movie. I loved feeling like I was watching a Broadway musical. I loved the amazing cast, the songs, the choreography, and just the storyline in general. Directed and Produced by Ryan Murphy one thing that can be said is that this movie is a hit. If you’re looking for a movie that makes you feel as if you’re on a rollercoaster, then The Prom is perfect for you.
