Frederick High’s varsity coed cheer squad kicked off their competition season with a win. On Saturday, October 26, the Frederick cheer team attended Boo Bash, an annual Halloween-themed cheer competition held at Roosevelt High School, where the team won second place.
Boo Bash is the very first competition of the year for the cheerleaders. Frederick Cheer likes to think of it as a “warm up comp” because it is a local event that isn’t as critical as some of the others. This competition also gets the new cheerleaders ready for competition season and gives the returning cheerleaders a chance to shake off the dust and get back into a competitive mindset.
Boo Bash put Frederick Cheer up against Thompson Valley High School and Roosevelt High School. For the week before the bash, the cheerleaders ran the routine over and over again for two hours every day. During those two hours, the cheerleaders run their routines, then talk about what they need to fix, and then run it again until they fix those issues.
The cheer squad has positioned itself for success this season. After a few years of not being a co-ed team, this year is Frederick’s time to shine. They had spent all summer getting ready for this competition, and with a different coach and the greater opportunities a co-ed team offers, they are ready for success.
The rules for Boo Bash are simple: each team has five minutes on two different mats to warm up what they needed to do to compete, wait on deck for about ten minutes, and then perform a routine that lasts no longer than 10 minutes.
After the cheer teams performed, there was a mascot dance off, which was where all the mascots from every school that was competing there would get on the mat and dance, and the audience would get to determine who won the mascot competition. Sadly, Freddy the Eagle did not win.
Cheer’s next competition is a league battle in November.
