A quaint dinner. A quiet night. A group of unexpected customers must come together to figure out why they are stuck in a time loop, and how they can escape… this is the premise behind Unified Theatre’s production of Full Moon Over Route 66.
Unified Theatre is new to the St. Vrain School District, with Frederick High School being the second school to kick off the program (Niwot High School had a Unified production of The Descendants last spring). This program has given many special and severe needs students an opportunity to explore a form of art that they had not previously had an opportunity to pursue.
“I have seen them discover and exercise new strengths such as one student is a talented dancer and another is very good at sound design. Several have expressed interest in doing more theatre shows at FHS,” Mrs. Kendle Butterworth, the FHS Unified Theatre teacher, explained.
“My favorite part about creating/producing the show was how Mrs. B asked everyone what kind of character they would want to be, and then put them into the play using those character choices,” said Blue Galyardt, a senior in the Unified Theatre class. “Knowing many of these kids, I know that a lot of them wouldn’t want to play a character they don’t feel connected to or like, so the fact that Mrs. B saw that too and made sure everyone was able to be who they wanted to be was amazing and very fun to me.”
“My favorite part of being involved in Unified Theatre is being able to support our unified students while also doing what I love,” said Joey Summers, a sophomore helping out with the show.
When asked what their favorite scene in the show was, everyone interviewed unanimously said that the final scene was their favorite, which will have audience members on their feet dancing. The performance will take place on November 7 at 6:30 PM. Admission is free.
