On Tuesday, October 11, Frederick Golden Eagles faced off against the Niwot Cougars at home in a hard-fought battle.
The game started off with a bang for Frederick. After an absolutely beautiful serve from Stephanie Codon caused some confusion on the Niwot side, their middle completely missed the ball, giving Frederick the first point of the game. After the first three points, Niwot started off a comeback to take the lead for a little bit before the two teams started going point for point. Frederick then locked in and put on enough pressure on the Cougars for a 20-25 point set win for Frederick.
Frederick came into set two with a 1-0 lead, ready to take another big dig at the Cougars. The Golden Eagles started set two off very strong with the first point of the set. After Stephanie Cogdon again got a great hit that was way out of Niwot’s reach, Niwot took a quick 3-1 lead. Frederick quickly rebounded and got another set win at 19-25.
Frederick now had a huge 2-0 set lead over Niwot, but their lead didn’t last long. Niwot got the advantage after an unfortunate third set by Tatianna Staab, They kept a solid lead over Frederick for most of the set ending, it with a 25-15 score.
The Cougars came into set four with momentum with nothing to lose and all to gain. The Golden Eagles took the first point with an out-of-bounds serve, but Niwot got a quick and easy 3-1 lead. Niwot was able to hold that lead and barely gave Frederick anything to work, dominating the fourth set with a 25-16 win.
This left Niwot and Frederick both tied 2-2 before the last set — both teams went into set five with an all-or-nothing mentality. The set started with an absolute hammer hit from Niwot for point one. Frederick didn’t let that momentum last long by tying the score up at 3-3 with a great hit by Isabelle Ramer. Niwot once again showed their dominance over Frederick by pulling off the comeback winning with a 15-8 score, leaving them at a winning 3-2 set score.
