The FHS Green Club is all about having fun and keeping our planet safe!

Frederick Green Club is a group that works to create student environmental awareness programs and support the ecological health of the students and staff of Frederick High School. The club does this by putting plans in place to reduce schoolwide energy consumption, enriching classrooms with elements from nature, and seeding plants around the school grounds. They also provide community service by planting trees in nearby neighborhoods and regularly cleaning up local parks.

The current Green Club faculty sponsor is Mrs. Desiree Paswaters. “Five years ago, Mrs. Christina Smith started the Green club and gave plants to all the teachers,” said Mrs. Paswaters. “I thought that was really cool. When the students came in to water the plants, I asked if she needed any help — that led to me co-sponsoring with her. When she moved away, I became the sponsor.”

The goal of Green Club is to make students more aware of how their decisions impact the environment while making improvements to the school to reduce waste. One of the Green Club’s first projects was to fundraise to add bottle-filling stations to Frederick High. They frequently hold fundraisers to finance these kinds of projects and always need student help for them.

While much of the club’s work is hands-on, members of Green Club also research current environmental issues and provide their findings to the community by making posters and posting on social media. They believe that spreading environmental awareness is the only way to combat future climate disasters and make a sustainable tomorrow.

Membership in Green Club is easy: just stop by one of their biweekly meetings and be willing to lend a hand. “Green Club can be for anybody — as long as you like plants and hanging out,” said Mrs. Paswaters. “No skills are required — it’s just an open door for everyone.”
