The Silence of Bones by Jane Hur (Hardcover, 336 pages)

Darlene Strange, Staff Writer

June Hur’s novel, The Silence of Bones, is historical fiction and a mystery novel. At the beginning of the book, the protagonist was brought into the police station at the capital to begin the job of looking at corpses and grabbing tea. When a man mysteriously dies, Seol feels like she must work on the case. Almost as if she is drawn to it. She starts to develop an attraction to the case and grows to like one of the investigators. While everything is happening with her job, Seol is in search of her brother’s grave and this starts to make her miss home a lot.

As the mystery continues, Seol continues to discover secrets and deeper truths about herself. The Silence Of Bones is a unique novel but also a wonderful one, to say the least. This mystery makes it an even better novel. It made me wonder what was going to happen next. With all the turns you wonder what is going to happen next it had me on the edge of my seat. One of the big parts of this novel is family. The way that the author portrays the whole family life makes the book even better to read. The author made this novel hard to beat.

The culture is what makes it a great novel as well. The culture of this novel puts it in the historical fiction genre. It adds to the storyline and adds to the family plot points. Seol as the protagonist was a great addition. She is an inspiration for many girls because she stands up for herself no matter what. She is also an inspiration to show that women can work in the government no matter what. She cares a lot about people getting justice due to her job. In a world where gender is a main topic and men tend to lead in her life and job titles, she’s doing great to show people what she is truly for. She may not have superpowers but she is a very intelligent and independent woman.

I would highly recommend The Silence Of Bones because it’s an empowering book and it shows that women can be very powerful and can be a part of law enforcement and the government. This is a great book for women that don’t feel like they have a place. It is one book I will always remember.
