When testing day arrives, students can feel the chill run through their bones as they prepare themselves. Every year at Frederick High school, students take the PSAT or the SAT, a single test that unlocks a door of opportunities to better their education for their future. Although it seems that scores always fall low, leaving a wave of sadness and disappointment.
Although there are always solutions to an issue and ways that can overall improve the performance of students. The average SAT score for Frederick High School is 1100, with math being 530 and reading/writing being 560.
That leaves the percent proficient for math at 19% and reading/writing proficiency at 51% This data simply shows how unfortunately low SAT scores have been and may continue to be if a change doesn’t occur.
Data from this website shows that, although Fredrick High School has had academic growth, it’s still low-scoring information, which indicates that many students are still only approaching expectations. The fact is that with SAT scores being low, it raises worries for college and students’ futures.
Hayden Will, a freshman who attends Frederick, was asked what she thinks is causing the decline in SAT performances. She stated, “I think the thing that is causing the decline in SAT performances at our school is the weight teachers are giving us. They are really just giving us an article cooler slideshow to take notes on, but they aren’t physically explaining it to us or talking hands-on with the students.“
Many factors play a role in why scores at Frederick High School are low. One reason is that many students lack the preparedness for these tests. Another reason is that students feel they’re not accessing the right information or tools needed for this test, and they simply feel anxious.
To maximize students’ potential, these problems must be fixed. When interviewing students, we asked, What do you think could be improved in your everyday class education for test scores?
A junior at Frederick High School, Maribel De Luna states, “We should have shorter class periods since there’s only like thirty minutes within the class that a student actually listens and even longer times where students slack off. Most don’t do their homework during classes; if we had shorter class periods, they would have no choice but to do it.“
This example simply proves that students need more help and an overall system classroom setting. Appropriate solutions that the school environment could improve the low SAT scores include organizing practice tests, teaching test-taking strategies, helping students who are struggling, providing prep resources, explaining SAT-related concepts, providing support in school settings, Etc.
Overall, there are many opportunities Frederick High School offers, but there are ways the school system can further improve SAT scores. There are also reasons why the SAT scores were low from a student’s perspective.
Solutions recommended to students so they can help themselves include setting goals, setting a clear plan, taking challenging courses, prioritizing prep and preparation, believing in yourself and being positive.
The SAT scores at Frederick High School have been quite sad, which can lead to unfortunate outcomes for the students’ futures, but with encouragement and support from the school, teachers, families and community, students’ scores will better. Every student deserves the chance of opportunities to succeed and follow their dreams.
