The following review is for a film rated R by the MPA. The film contains excessive profanity, blood and visceral gore, graphic violence, drug and alcohol abuse, violence against children and animals, partial male and female nudity, and implied sexual acts.
Micheal Shanks makes his first feature-length film, which is Together, a movie starring Dave Franco, who is most known for his role in the Now You See Me movies, and Alison Brie, who is known for her role in Bojack Horseman.
It feels very inspired by body horror classics like The Thing and The Fly. This movie is greatly helped by its interesting concept, the chemistry from the two actors, and the effects to make it a great film to watch with only small issues.
The story revolves around a couple who has recently made a big change in their lifestyle with tensions already high; they encounter an unnatural force that brings them closer together. The plot of the movie flows really nicely as the force escalates at a steady rate that makes the movie go slowly.
The plot of the movie also holds a lot of weight for Michael Shanks, with him having this to say about it: “It’s not just a script; it’s a reflection of something deeply personal.” Unfortunately the ending of the movie does just fall flat and is not very satisfying. There was a perfect time for the movie to end with an amazing final scene, but it just kept going.
However, the producers are currently being sued for allegedly copying the film from a short film called Better Half. This recent development has caused the movie to be hit with a lot of backlash. Despite these allegations, there are multiple things this movie is able to do to stand on its own.
One of these things is the acting that comes from Alison and Dave. Due to these two actors being married in real life, they have a great amount of chemistry that really brings the characters’ relationship to life. The combination also allows the emotional scenes between the two characters to really hit home.
Another selling point of the movie is the amazing effects throughout the movie. Using a mix of practical effects and CGI, the movie is able to become unsettling to watch. The body horror of the movie is also able to go up against other movies in the genre like The Substance.
This movie is great to watch if you’re looking for a weird romance movie that is also deeply unsettling. For anyone who is looking for strictly just a romance movie, then it is not what they are looking for in the slightest. Overall it is a great movie to watch that is able to keep the viewers’ attention throughout the movie.
