The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) created a deadline requiring a Real ID or passport to board a plane. This deadline was on May 7th, 2025 but it was pushed back yet again.
For the last 2 years people who often travel were waiting anxiously for the date they would start needing a Real ID or a passport to start traveling, that date being May 7th, 2025. A Real ID is basically a state issued driver’s license or identification that meets the requirements of the Real ID Act of 2005. A Real ID will also have a golden star in the upper right corner of the card.
To acquire a Real ID you will need to make a visit to the DMV in person and give documents such as a proof of identity, social security number, 2 proofs of state residency, and a proof of U.S. citizenship. These requirements and documentation may be different depending on which state you are in and your DMV requirements. Make sure to double check with your nearest and local DMV.
This Real ID will require all of the U.S. Travelers that are 18 or older to show a Real ID or another allowable form of identification. This was brought to attention after the 9/11 attacks and was recommended as an alternative for safety measures.
If you don’t have a Real ID you can still fly according to TSA requirements. However, you will need to follow different procedures and additional screening during the TSA process. Other options can include a Valid U.S. Passport, DHS Trusted Travelers cards, U.S. Military ID or a permanent resident card.
Although as of Tuesday May 6th, 2025 it was announced that if you failed to show or didn’t have a Real ID you wouldn’t be denied boarding. Since then it has officially been pushed back for the fifth time. The date that is now set for the next time is May 7th, 2027 to require a Real ID. Make sure to have your Real ID or identification card ready by 2027.
