This week, Key Club has brought an exciting way to show kindness around Frederick High School by finding a way for others to receive and give kindness to others.
This new project is called “Fill the Bucket.” At lunch, there is a table near the counseling office that has a clear plastic bucket. Next to the bucket, note cards, envelopes, and pencils are available for students to write kind letters on.
All students have to do is write a letter or note to anyone. It could be a teacher, friends, or someone they don’t know. Students will write kind words to their person of choice.
Once the student finishes writing the kind words, the card should be placed in the envelope and put into the box. Students will need to make sure that they write the recipients first and last name on the envelope. These letters will be delivered on February 19 in advisory.
Students can say anything kind on these cards. They can compliment the person or tell them to have a nice day. The main purpose of these cards is to be the highlight of someone’s day, so be mindful of what is written.
This includes the letters or cards sent to friends. Even if they are close friends, say something nice. Compliment them even. Just remember that the whole point of these letters is to spread kindness around the school.
To make sure that that goal is accomplished, all of these letters will be checked and read by members of Key Club, so keep it clean!
Key Club is an organization where members “perform acts of service in their communities. They also learn leadership skills by running meetings, planning projects, and holding elected leadership positions at the club, district, and international levels.”
The Frederick High School chapter of Key Club is spreading joy and kindness all around, whether it’s for people or small businesses in the community. For example, this past holiday season, Key Club members went to help with a food drive at the New Horizons Christian Church. Key Club doesn’t just volunteer—they make time to have fun!
“I think this idea is a great way to spread happiness around school. It brings a smile to my face that my friends wanted to write me a letter,” said freshman Lizbeth Hernandez.
Junior Maddie Roybal said, “I thought of so many people to write the letters to. I know I would be happy if someone gave me a kind and thoughtful letter. I know the letters would brighten the students day with the letter they are getting.”
They had fun making cards for senior citizens, making Play-Doh turkey for Thanksgiving, and all sorts of other acts of service that benefited their community. Key Club is so much more than just a club. It’s where others can get together and make a difference. Spreading kindness is the joy of it all, which can have a big impact on anyone’s life. Being the reason that someone smiles is a great feeling, and more people should be the reason someone smiles.
