After 8 years, Moana has come back to sail across the sea on an adventure. This time, Moana has to find the long lost island of Motufetu and break the curse.
The 2016 Moana takes a look into Polynesian culture and religious beliefs. Moana is determined to be a way-finder, and goes out on an adventure to find Maui, a demigod who has great power. Together they need restore the heart of Te Fiti. The first film captured hearts with its detailed visuals, memorable music, and the empowering story of self discovery.
Moana 2 aimed to build off of the story of the first movie, while also introducing new characters, challenges and settings. The sequel picks up on where it left off, with Moana now recognized as a leader among her people. The second movie basically just repeats the same story of her going into the vast Pacific Ocean.
The only major difference between these two movies is what Moana has to do to save her people. While this new film builds more of her character and still looks into the Polynesian culture, it is very similar to the first movie. The movie in general has amazing visuals and a great soundtrack. Moana 2 builds more off of Moana and Mauis friendship.
Although Moana 2 introduces a new theme and new characters, it echoes the same conflicts, core themes, and challenges of the first movie. Some viewers may find the plot lacking in originality and innovation, which is something people first look for in a Disney movie.
Moana 2 was originally supposed to be made into a Disney Plus show, but then was made into a movie instead. In an interview with Collider, the directors Dana Ledoux Miller, David Derrick Jr. and Jason Hand said there are some big differences between a show and a movie, so it was hard making this show into a movie. “During the interview, Miller, Derrick Jr., and Hand explained to Weintraub that there are some obvious differences between making a movie and a TV series, and much was taken into consideration when the moment came to decide Moana 2‘s fate. The trio commented on the slate of new characters they introduced, but Derrick Jr. revealed that a simple realization made them go for the big-screen release.”
The movie did good in the box office, making $717 million world wide. Moana 2 is expected to be the number 1 spot in the box office. The first Moana movie earned $679 million worldwide. The second movie is breaking more records and earning more money than the first one.
Despite the criticisms, Moana 2 still offers top-notch visuals, animations, and soundtracks, and an enjoyable experience after all. These factors ensure a delightful watch, but the repetition in the storyline may leave some viewers disappointed
