Halloween has always been a special day at Frederick High. While other schools have some people dress up, Frederick celebrates with hallway decorations, hidden pumpkin scavenger hunts, a month of weekly horror movie screenings, and a scary story contest (you can read this year’s winning story here).
Yet something had been missing from Frederick High: the annual student Halloween Costume Contest, which ended (with many other school activities) during the COVID pandemic. This year, Frederick Quill and Scroll was happy to bring it back, with nearly sixty students stepping up to try to win the coffin full of candy.
“This [contest] was so much fun, and the students loved it so much,” Student Council sponsor Maddie Precht told The Lantern. “I wasn’t here for the first contest, but I’m so glad it’s back.”
The contest was held during both lunches, and students were evaluated on originality (how common or unique the subject of the costume is), creativity (how well the costume came together), and completeness (in costume from head to toe). Ultimately, teacher judges Julia Smith and Daniel Haas, counselor judge Delaney Cook, and admin judge Ashlie Swanson picked three winners, all with perfect scores of 90 points. Take a look at some of this year’s entries, as well as some of our other favorite costumes from around the building.
