Frederick High School has a wide variety of programs, including sports, clubs, and after-school activities. Joining these activities takes away free time after school but is worth it for the memories and friendships.
Joining any musical group gives students the ability to achieve new skills and bond with amazing communities. A choir is a group of people who sing and perform together, and Frederick offers multiple of these choir groups for you to join.
These choir groups include:
- Bel Canto, which is the introductory 9th grade choir course
- Varsity Blue, which is a jazz/show choir for 10-12 graders
- Concert choir, which focuses on chamber, classical, and large group pieces
- Treble choir, a choir that requires auditions, which focuses on a variety of music written for four to six parts of women’s voices
- Tenor/bass choir, which studies a variety of music such as doo wop, contemporary, classic, and pop
- Mixed Choir is an ensemble open to all students and will serve as a place for anyone who wants to sing and perform.
Varsity Blue is one of the most popular throughout the choir program because it involves dancing and singing. Junior Isa Bosica has had very positive experiences with the Varsity Blue community. “I would say the choir community is very welcoming! Everyone in Varsity Blue is very kind and fun to be with, and also great people to be around to focus on the material and get work done.”

As for other choirs, they are still very open, and students are able to create lifelong bonds and friendships through them. “I enjoy the community and the way everyone can get along and get through the harder times even when everyone isn’t focused,” said freshman Dane LaCome.
“The choir community is like a huge family that can get mad at times but will always come back together, and we never judge each other. We use tough love, but only for the good of helping each other and for the choir to get better,” said freshman Addyson Quattlebaum.
The high school choir program is a highlight for many students, offering a space to learn music and improve on their singing voices. With a group of singers filled with energy and ready to sing and practice for their repertoire. Repertoire includes everything from classic choral pieces to contemporary songs, making each performance exciting and new.
There’s an indescribable high that comes from standing on stage as the audience watch’s these choirs sing their final notes. “My favorite performance so far was our performance at the Niwot Fall Festival because when we sang one of our songs called “Dolly,” everyone had their jaws on the floor, and it was the best feeling ever!” said freshman Addyson Quattlebaum.
Under the instruction of a committed choir director, Kevin Brown. Students explore music that spans different genres, including classical, pop, and musical theater. Throughout the year, the choir performs at school events, concerts, and competitions to display their talent while inspiring the community with their music.
