Excitement, surprise, craziness, and zombies. The Frederick Theater department is currently performing their rendition of the play Not Your Average Zombie Apocalypse with shows on October 24th at 7pm and shows on Saturday October 26th at 2pm and 7pm.
Frederick’s performance of Not Your Average Zombie Apocalypse is an adaptation of the play under the same name written by Richard Gremel. With a running time of roughly 90 minutes in addition to a brief 15 minute intermission, this comedic, science fiction story–with hints of romance–takes place in St Vrain High and the real chaos begins after a science fair project takes a turn for the worse.
The play follows the five main characters as they try to save their school from the Zombie Apocalypse: The Popular Girl (Hannah Watson), the Popular Jock (Shaun Furr), the Rebel (Dani Avail), the Social Outcast (Melina Joy), and, of course, the Nerd (Brayden Spotts).
As the story unfolds, the audience is guided by the stereotypical Nerd, who also serves as the story’s narrator.
In typical teenage story fashion, the popular girl, who is dating the popular jock, gets paired with the nerd for a chemistry experiment that she needs to pass in order to get a good grade in the class.
However, it’s once the project is complete and the jock’s dumb friend, Brad (Joey Summers), makes a dumb decision that ultimately causes the school problems: a not so average zombie apocalypse.
Audiences will instantly be drawn in by the Frederick Actors’ seamless ability to fully commit to their roles. From the scary-realistic screams of students, to the hysterical laughter of the chemistry teacher, there is never a dull moment in this play.
It should also be noted that there are a few special guests throughout the performances. Dr. Fox, principal of Frederick High School, will be featured in the show on Thursday night.
Mr. Liss, Frederick’s orchestra teacher will be participating Saturday afternoon, and finally Dr. Santos, Frederick High School admin, will be showcased on Saturday night.
To make the play feel even more realistic, like the audience is truly a part of a zombie apocalypse. Spectators should be aware that there will be out of pocket screams from actors in addition to the several zombies stumbling down the aisles as they make their way around the school, searching for more brains to eat.
Chris Tone, a local Frederick photographer, exclaimed: “Frederick Theater is bringing a taste of what it would look like if Zombies invaded the halls of Frederick High School with their production of Not Your Average Zombie Apocalypse. And the whole team from those on stage, supporting staff, audio and lighting, bring it all alive to Frederick High!”
With this, comes the astonishing effects of the stage as it is constantly being transformed into different areas around St Vrain High. From the chemistry classroom where all the chaos originated, to the miscellaneous rooms around the school, the set changes are swift and almost effortless.
Joey Summers, a junior portraying Brad, noted how “a show is different every time. And that’s what makes it special. And that’s what makes theater special. And I think it’s a great time for anyone who attends.”
To conclude, Frederick’s rendition of Not Your Average Zombie Apocalypse is one that all who are interested in having a good laugh, being surprised by an unhinged scream, and supporting the arts should attend.
Tickets may be purchased at the door or online at fhs-music.org.
On Thursday evening, to encourage student and audience attendance, Frederick Student council will be offering pizza to all audiences before the show, a special treat at intermission, and finally ice cream afterwards. If you are a student, there will be reduced ticket prices and further questions should be directed to Ms. Prect.
