Most teachers have the mindset of helping their students grow and help shape who they become as they grow older. Although, there is a growing concern on some teachers taking advantage of their authority and their power over the kids, as well as some concern of the attitude these teachers have towards their students. These attitudes can have everlasting effects on the way students view their teachers or the subject that this teacher teaches.
Teachers do deal with a lot of stress with the administrative tasks, preparing lessons, and managing their classroom, and this could easily lead to frustration, which can accidentally be directed towards the students. However, when this is a recurring issue that usually happens with a specific individual or group of students, this will usually lead to these students not respecting you and your classroom the way they used to.
When students feel as if teachers gave them an attitude, they feel disrespected, undervalued, and especially demotivated in class. This creates a negative classroom environment, which makes it uncomfortable for the entire class.
One of the primary issues with the attitude from the teachers lately is it has such a negative impact on students self-esteem and confidence in class and future classes students take on that subject. When teachers respond to students questions or mistakes with sarcasm or impatience, it makes students feel less obligated to try their best in the class.
Teachers words and advice on students work is some of the most crucial information and the people students listen to most when trying to learn something, and when they confront students or tell them their mistakes with impatience, students feel as if they aren’t good enough to do good in the class, which leads students to not put effort into the class.
Trust and mutual respect is essential in order to have a good relationship with the majority of students being taught, and it is key for students to feel most comfortable learning and getting questions wrong to learn from their mistakes. When students perceive their teachers as hostile or hard to approach, they are less likely to seek help or clarification on certain subjects or topics. This often leads to a lack of understanding and poor academic performance.
When teachers have a bad attitude or are usually frustrated, it leads to escalated problems in their classrooms. When teachers respond to students’ behavior with hostility, it often provokes defensive reactions. This makes a very chaotic learning environment where it will also affect other students around, leading to long-term repercussions for the students involved.
A school environment that represents respect is a two way street, students are much more likely to engage in learning and helping each other understand the topics as well.
To help this issue, schools need to provide teachers with good support and resources on managing their stress and maintaining a positive attitude with their students.
The challenges teachers do have to face and deal with are undeniable, but it is crucial for students and teachers to keep a positive attitude with their students in order to have a good relationship with students and so that they feel comfortable learning and growing in the classroom.
