Trailing after students to get to the right class. Was it in the E-hallway? Or upstairs, D-hallway? Can’t stop in the hallway and check the schedule; there’s too much of a crowd. Just duck into a classroom and check real quickly. One problem though: only 2 more minutes until class starts!
Welcome to Frederick High School! Where we desperately need an upcoming system for new students. Do you know the bell schedule? Yeah, me neither; guessing when lunch ends is the thought of the day, other than “Where are my classes?“
As a new student to the district as well as the school, I feel like orientation a few days before school starts is not sufficient to learn where exactly these classes are. I’ve needed to lean on Infinite Campus for the times of the classes, but after the first week of school has passed, I’ve failed to depend on the app already.
But maybe being a new student has its perks, eventually. The one thing I’d recommend is to make friends with everyone! It’s not fun to be the lonely kid at lunch or in a class with no friends; trust me, I know that feeling. So, even if it’s a simple “Hi, can I sit here?”. You’ll be surprised as to what friendship may blossom after that interaction.
Many students (and staff) may not know of the many functions of the Frederick Lantern yet. Visit our own school website for upcoming news and events! Of course, you’d know if you were reading this at the current moment, but enough of that. After tinkering around and seeing what the website had to offer as a student of journalism, I came across an article that’d been called “New Student Survival Guide,” yet nothing was there. Did someone just forget to post their article? Or did they want us to think that there was something there?
Instead, I took the liberty of that position by writing an article (which, by the way, thank you for reading) on just how to make the first couple weeks of school better for new students, since Frederick needs a better plan for it. I get it; the first couple days (or even weeks) at a new school are hard, and all you want to do is go home. But think about it: one of the many perks of Frederick High School is that school ends at 2:45. It sounds like a pretty good deal.
We’ve got a lot to learn about Frederick High School; welcoming new students is on the radar, but the futures that blossom from here every year—the career starters, the introduction of becoming an adult with our Advisory Class—all I’m saying to you is to make the best of it. Talk to that one kid, join that club, and go to the sports practice. Take a risk, because it could be the best thing for you.
