Pondering the Past: Pantoums
May 14, 2021
As the year closes and students and teachers start to look back on the past year with the Frederick Dreamcatcher decided to look back ourselves with some poetry. Below are several pantoums from Mr. Coon’s creative writing class. A pantoum is a type of poem that discusses memories through repeating lines in a regular fashion. We hope you enjoy these looks back at the past.
Grandma’s Sugar Cookies – Camry Brown (Junior)
The tan layer of dough sticks to the tray
The sweet smell of vanilla hangs in the air
Her apron wraps around her body
Flour covers the countertops like snow
The sweet smell of vanilla hangs in the air
Cookie cutters are sprinkled throughout the kitchen Four covers the countertops like snow
Powdered sugar melts in the milk and melted butter
Cookie cutters are sprinkled throughout the kitchen
The cookies are as golden as the rings on her wrinkled hands Powdered sugar melts in the milk and melted butter
Food coloring turns the icing into a Jackson Pollock piece
The cookies are as golden as the rings on her wrinkled hands Her glasses frame her face perfectly
Food coloring turns the icing into a Jackson Pollock piece Icing paints the shapes of deliciousness
Her glasses framed her face perfectly
The tan layer of cookies stick to the plate
Icing paints the shapes of deliciousness
The sweet smell of vanilla covers the sadness of death
Remembered By the Stars – Damien Sullivan (Junior)
Getting a game winner has always been my dream
Doing the most important thing will always be a good feeling
Always shooting for the stars and charts to be remembered
Don’t ever settle for less when you could get more
Doing the most important thing will always be a good feeling
Weather it’s a kick or a catch it’s the thought and effort to make it
Always shooting for the stars and charts to be remembered
Making the team happy is what matters, we not me
Weather it’s a kick or a catch it’s the thought and effort to make it
Actually getting one was the greatest thing especially when it really matters
Making the team happy is what matters, we not me
You’ll never have a better 30 seconds then when your teammates run at you with joy
Actually getting one was the greatest thing especially when it really matters
Getting a game winner has always been my dream
You’ll never have a better 30 seconds then when your teammates run at you with joy
Always shooting for the stars and charts to be remembered
First Date – Jose Valadez (Senior)
I saw the way you looked as we listened to Bad Bunny.
it was like that one thing that can make you happy with a flick of a switch
as if there was nothing in your way to bring you down.
I saw the way you looked at me and you began to blush and turn red.
It was like that one thing that can make you happy with a flick of a switch
As I sat there thinking about the many thoughts at once, you made my day.
I saw the way you looked at me and you began to blush and turn red.
I sat there next to you as you started to sing along as if it took you away.
As I sat there thinking about the many thoughts at once, you made my day.
Watching you smile as bright as the sun, as my sight focused on you.
I sat there next to you as you started to sing along as if it took you away.
Thinking of the times I tried to work up the courage to talk to you.
Watching you smile as bright as the sun, as my sight focused on you.
I saw the way you looked as we listened to Bad Bunny.
Thinking of the times I tried to work up the courage to talk to you
As if there was nothing in your way to bring you down.
