Colorado joined 14 other states in holding its Democratic and Republicans Presidential Primary Elections on March 5, 2024. These primaries went well for both President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump. Biden won the Democratic contest with 83% of the vote while Trump won 63% of the Republican vote. Though both candidates are clearly popular in their respective parties, they are also facing similar challenges from a critical electorate.

On Tuesday afternoon, Kevin McCarthy became the first House Speaker removed from his position by Congress. While the removal came down to a tight 216-210 vote, the majority of Colorados House members voted to remove the Republican speaker... including Republican Ken Buck. This historic vote came after McCarthy pushed Congress to pass a continuing resolution on Saturday to avert a government shutdown until Nov. 14

National disaster was avoided Saturday, September 30 when a short-term spending bill was passed with bipartisan support in the House and Senate. The law moves the deadline for a new spending resolution to November 14, giving the US House 45 days to resolve disagreements between House Democrats, House party-line Republicans, and the House Freedom Caucus. A shutdown would furlough over 43,000 Colorado government workers, close Colorado National Parks, increase flight delays at DIA, and pause benefits for the half a million Coloradans on food stamps.
