Who is Selena Quintanilla Pérez?

Selena was a beloved Mexican-American Tejano singer born April 16th, 1971 in Lake Jackson, Texas. Selena contributed to the Mexican-American community and soon was known as “The Queen of Tejano Music.”

Selena was known for her kindness, fashion, modeling and of course her beautiful voice. Selena was awarded with multiple Grammy awards. As well as receiving Female Vocalist of the Year, Female Entertainer of the Year, and many other awards. Not to mention receiving multiple awards with the American Tejano band formed by Abraham Quinatanilla known as Selena y Los Dinos. Selena has received lots of awards in the past and till this very day is still receiving big awards.

Lots of Selena’s songs were big hits, but Selena’s most famous song was Como La Flor. With her beautifully sung vocals, goosebumping lyrics and dynamic performance, the track skyrocketed Selena’s notoriety and became her most famous song. Selena expanded the audience for Tejano music tremendously and created a rise in Latin Music popularity across the United States.

Selena was the first ever woman to make it far in the Tejano music industry. But that soon came to an end when she was shot by her fan club president Yolanda Saldívar. On March 31st, 1995, Selena was meeting her Fan Club President Yolanda Saldívar at the Days INN Hotel in Corpus Christi, Texas to recover some missing financial records. Soon after, Selena found herself running trying to escape but then was shot in the back by Yolanda. Selena made an escape to the lobby right before collapsing and being rushed to the hospital. Her last words was “Yolanda 158” referring to the convicted murderer and room number.

It was a devastating loss in the music industry and she is dearly missed. Go watch and celebrate the notorious Selena film anniversary on April 7th, in theaters near you.
